From November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign calls for global action to increase worldwide awareness about violence against Girls and Women.
In support of this civil society initiative, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, launched a campaign "UNiTE to End Violence against Women", inviting you to "Orange the World" from November 25 to December 10, to symbolize a brighter future without violence.
Indeed, 1 in 3 Women has experienced physical or sexual violence. Violence against Women is a human rights violation, a consequence of discrimination and gender inequality. It impedes progress and development in many areas such as eradicating poverty, combating HIV/ AIDS and maintaining peace and security.
One of the major challenges is the substantial funding and resources shortfall. The Sustainable Development Goals include a specific target on ending violence, offering hope to all Women. However, it must be adequately funded in order to bring real and significant changes in their lives.
In 2016, the “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” campaign strongly emphasizes the need of greater resource mobilization.
