Extremism & Radicalization : Special Meeting of the African Women's Forum in Geneva

 

The African Women's Forum Special Meeting, which took place in Geneva in the framework of the Homeland & Global Security Forum in October 2015, notably addressed the issues related to the role of Women in the fight against violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism.

Reducing youths’ responsiveness to violent extremist rhetoric, enabling women to fight against violent extremist discourse in their families and communities, reinforcing the collaboration with civil society and notably women’s organizations, were at the centre of the debates.

Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, Wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria brings her support to the African Women's Forum

Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, Wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has been officially welcomed as a Member of the Honorary Committee of the African Women’s Forum on the occasion of the Homeland & Global Security Forum in Geneva.

The Official Ceremony, co-chaired by Mr. Philippe Douste Blazy, Under Secretary General, United Nations and Member of the Honorary Committee and Mr. Abdulaziz O. Altwaijri, Director General of ISESCO and Vice-Chairperson of the Committee, was attended by numerous high level dignitaries as well as an important Delegation of influential Nigerian Women, among which Mrs. Oludolapo Osinbajo, Wife of the Vice President, Governors Wives and Members of the House of Representatives.

Mrs. Susan Shabangu, Minister for Women, South Africa joins the African Women's Forum in Geneva

Mrs. Susan Shabangu, Minister for Women in the Presidency of South Africa
joins the African Women's Forum in Geneva.

 

Minister Shabangu has a long history of political involvement, having been involved in the anti-apartheid struggle serving in various capacities, she was one of the women who led the revival of the Federation of South African (FEDSAW) during the time of high repression in the late 1978, leading up to the formation of the Federation of Transvaal Women, Natal Women’s Organisation (NOW), Port Elizabeth Women’s Organisation. 

 

In 1981 she was an active member of the Anti-Republic Campaign Committee and she was involved in the formation of the Release Mandela Campaign Committee (RMC) in 1982.

 

Minister Shabangu recently launched the 2015 Women's Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.

EAC is a program of Education Above All which aims to significantly reduce the numbers of children worldwide who are missing out on their right to education. Since its creation, it has launched more than 25 projects in countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. To date it has enabled 500,000 children to access primary education through these projects. Fostering innovation and creativity, it will share solutions that can be scaled up to reach millions of children and deliver sustainable education over the long term.
